Community members in Karasabai, Region Nine, have been equipped with critical skills to help combat gender-based violence following a two-day training programme hosted last week by the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, in collaboration with the Indigenous Peoples Commission.

The training, conducted under the ICAN programme, focused on raising awareness and building understanding of gender-based violence, family violence, sexual violence, and child abuse.

Participants were also guided on recognising signs of abuse and understanding appropriate reporting mechanisms.

In addition to theoretical knowledge, the programme emphasized practical conflict-resolution skills aimed at strengthening community-led responses and fostering safer environments.

Officials said the initiative is designed to empower residents to serve as advocates and first responders within their communities.

The Ministry noted that initiatives such as this play a vital role in strengthening protection systems in hinterland and Indigenous communities, while promoting awareness and collective responsibility in addressing and preventing abuse.
