35-Y-0 Police Corporal Yonelle Cumberbatch of Eastville Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara, was on Tuesday granted bail in the sum of $500,000 when she appeared before Magistrate Abigail Gibbs at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Court.

Mahes’s family at the Sparendaam Court today.

Cumberbatch was charged with causing death by dangerous driving, following a fatal accident that claimed the life of 15-year-old Navindra Mahes, a student of Annandale Secondary School.

The incident occurred on Thursday, October 30, 2025, along the Success Public Road, East Coast Demerara, as Mahes was attempting to use a pedestrian crossing.

The accused was not required to enter a plea and is expected to return to court on January 6, 2026, as the case continues.

Family members of the late Mahes were present at the courthouse for the proceedings, visibly emotional as the matter came before the court.

Mahes tragically lost his life on last Thursday morning after being struck by a car driven by Cumberbatch, along the Success Public Road, East Coast Demerara.

The incident occurred around 7:30 a.m., and Mahes was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.

A post-mortem examination conducted on Mahes, confirmed that he died from multiple injuries resulting from a motor vehicle accident.

The examination was performed at the Georgetown Public Hospital mortuary by Government Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh
