– to review progress in strengthening Waste Management Systems

October 13 2025

Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Priya Manickchand, on Monday conducted a follow-up visit to the Haags Bosch Landfill Site on the East Bank of Demerara to assess ongoing operations and review progress made in improving the facility’s management systems.

The visit forms part of the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to enhance national solid waste management and ensure landfill operations are conducted in keeping with environmental best practices.

During the exercise, Minister Manickchand met with site managers and technical officers to examine developments related to infrastructure maintenance, waste segregation, and improved disposal methods.

She underscored the importance of efficient landfill management in maintaining clean and healthy communities, noting that such initiatives support the broader goals of the Government’s National Beautification and Waste Management Plan.

The Minister also reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to continuous oversight and collaboration with local authorities to ensure that the Haags Bosch facility remains functional, sustainable, and responsive to Guyana’s growing waste management needs.

In addition, Minister Manickchand highlighted plans to establish new landfill facilities in Regions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, and 10, a move aimed at expanding sustainable waste management infrastructure and improving environmental conditions across the country.
