Jury Finds ‘Minutes’ Guilty of Cocaine Trafficking

A jury has  unanimously found 31-year-old Shemroy Robertson, also known as “Minutes,” guilty of possessing narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.

Robertson, a clothes vendor of Mandela Avenue, Georgetown, appeared before Justice Priscilla Chandra-Hanif at the High Court in Demerara, where he was convicted of having 1.156 kilogrammes of cocaine in his possession on January 15, 2016, for trafficking.

The conviction stemmed from a 2016 operation conducted by the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU). During the operation, officers pursued a gold Nissan Bluebird in the vicinity of Princes Street, Louisa Row, and Hadfield Street in Georgetown.

During the chase, Robertson was seen tossing a black plastic bag through the driver’s side window.

The bag was recovered by CANU officers and found to contain 139 pellets of a whitish substance. Subsequent forensic testing confirmed the contents to be cocaine.

Following the discovery, Robertson was tracked down to a residence at Mandela Avenue, where he was found hiding under a bed. He was promptly arrested and charged.

During the trial, Robertson was represented by attorney Lyndon Amsterdam, while attorneys Darin Chan and Latifah  Elliot prosecuted the case on behalf of the State.

In his defence, Robertson gave an unsworn statement from the dock, denying any involvement in the offence.

However, after deliberating on the evidence, the jury rejected his version of events and returned a unanimous verdict of guilty.

Justice Chandra-Hanif deferred sentencing to a later date.
