Pres. Ali Outlines Strategy to Combat Poverty and Improve Livelihoods

President Dr. Irfaan Ali on Sunday in a public message, announced the government’s commitment to a comprehensive national strategy aimed at reducing poverty and improving the quality of life for all Guyanese.

The strategy includes expanded social programmes, targeted tax reforms, and strategic investments in healthcare, infrastructure, and agriculture.

Speaking during a live social media broadcast, President Ali highlighted the administration’s achievements over the past five years, including the removal of over 200 taxes and the implementation of reforms that have enhanced access to education, healthcare, and basic services like potable water. These efforts, he said, have already lifted thousands of families out of poverty.

A key component of the strategy is a massive investment in healthcare infrastructure.

The construction of 12 new regional hospitals is underway, ensuring that each administrative region is equipped with modern facilities.

In addition, telemedicine centres have been introduced to connect remote communities with specialized healthcare services globally.

The government has also supported initiatives such as the First Lady Arya Ali’s free sanitary product programme for adolescent girls, which aims to reduce the economic strain on low-income families.

In the agricultural sector, both rural and urban livelihoods are being strengthened through subsidies, enhanced irrigation, and improved access to packaging and processing infrastructure. Farmers’ markets are being established to ensure fresh produce is available and affordable for citizens.

President Ali emphasized the importance of transportation in reducing costs and improving livelihoods. Investments in new ferries, cargo vessels, and rural roads are designed to lower transport costs for producers and consumers alike, making local food more accessible and supporting small-scale enterprises.

Small business owners, farmers, fishermen, and miners have already benefited from tax reductions and access to critical equipment and infrastructure. According to President Ali, these interventions are part of a broader effort to create inclusive economic growth.

Looking ahead, the government plans to expand these initiatives in a structured and sustained manner, with the goal of ensuring that Guyana’s economic development continues to benefit every citizen.
