A 60-year-old Bartica resident has been fined $200,000 after pleading guilty to a charge of driving under the influence (DUI).

Deetnarrine Prahalad of Third Avenue, Bartica, appeared on Wednesday before Magistrate Teriq Mohammed at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court, where the charge was read to him.

The court heard that Prahalad was caught operating a motor vehicle while his breath alcohol level exceeded the legal limit. He admitted to the offence and was fined $200,000 with an alternative sentence of three months’ imprisonment if the fine is not paid.

The case underscores continued efforts by law enforcement to crack down on impaired driving and promote road safety.
