Gov’t Continues Education Push with $32M Grant Distribution in Reg. Six

June 4 2025– Minister of Agriculture,  Zulfikar Mustapha, on Tuesday spearheaded the distribution of approximately $32 million in cash grants under the Government’s ‘Because We Care’ initiative at the Corentyne Comprehensive High School in Region Six. The grants were delivered to parents of school-aged children as part of the administration’s continued investment in education and family welfare.

The ‘Because We Care’ programme, first launched in 2014 by the PPP/C Government, was designed to ease financial burdens on families and improve educational access.

Minister Mustapha underscored that the Government’s educational support extends beyond cash transfers. The State now funds the cost of up to eight subjects for students writing the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) exams. Additionally, tertiary education at public institutions—including the University of Guyana and the Guyana School of Agriculture—is now free of charge.

The distribution on the Corentyne Coast is part of a nationwide effort to ensure equitable educational support and continued opportunities for all students.

Although discontinued in 2015, the initiative was reinstated in 2020 following the PPP/C’s return to office. Since then, the value of the cash grant has grown from $10,000 to $55,000 in 2025.
