June 3 2025- Akeem Smith, a 30-year-old reservist soldier from West Coast Berbice, was on Monday, June 2, 2025, remanded to prison after being charged with several offences, including the assault of a police officer.

Smith appeared before Magistrate Sunil Scarce at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court, where he faced four charges stemming from an incident involving law enforcement.

He pleaded guilty to three of the charges: refusal to take a breathalyzer test, for which he was fined $50,000; resisting a peace officer, fined $20,000; and disorderly behaviour, which carried a fine of $15,000.

However, he pleaded not guilty to the charge of assaulting a peace officer. On that charge, he was remanded to prison pending further proceedings.

The matter has been adjourned to June 11, 2025, and will be heard at the Mahaicony Magistrate’s Court.
