An 84-year-old pensioner was arrested on Friday following the discovery of an unlicensed firearm, ammunition, and marijuana at his residence in Yarrowkabra, along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway.
Police said that ranks from the Highway Patrol Base conducted the operation around 15:30 hrs at Lot 124 Yarrowkabra, where they encountered Hubert Campbell, a shopkeeper and pensioner. Upon arrival, the officers identified themselves and observed Campbell behaving suspiciously as he sat on a bench under a shed within his shop.
When asked to submit to a search, Campbell initially refused and acted in a disorderly manner. After being cautioned, he eventually complied, allowing ranks to conduct a search.
During the process, police discovered a Taurus 9mm pistol with a magazine containing five live rounds of ammunition. Campbell reportedly admitted that he did not possess a license for the firearm or ammunition.
A subsequent search of the premises uncovered a quantity of leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis. The narcotics were later weighed at the Timehri Police Station, amounting to 30 grams.
Campbell was arrested, informed of the offences, and taken into custody. He is currently assisting police with the investigation as authorities continue their probe into the matter.
