Hours after a major explosion at the East Ruimveldt Police Outpost in Georgetown left many speculations and a bout of fear in some sections of the society, Crime Chief, Deputy Commissioner of Police  Wendell Blanhum has confirmed that it was an improvised Explosive Device which was thrown at the police outpost. This publication earlier reported that the explosion came from a suspected grenade.

At the time of the attack, there were police officers inside the facility on duty.

In a telephone interview with Deputy Commissioner Blanhum, he said the police were able to recover a number of bolts and nuts at the scene.

He also confirmed that soil samples were taken for  analysis to determine what substance was used to create the combustion.

UPDATE: Police outpost targeted with improvised explosive device

In the past, Molotov cocktails were used as a means of attacks against buildings and those comprised of channa and gasoline. The use of bolts and nuts in such improvised explosive devices are not new to Guyana as they were used in the late 70s early 80s in Georgetown.

Our police sources who are familiar with the investigations have also confirmed that the bolts and nuts have caused damage to the building of the Police Outpost including shattering windows.

There were no reported injuries to police or civilians
