As the Guyana Police Force continue in its efforts to get a handle of the crime situation, especially minor pockets of crimes taking place across the country, citizens continue to be victims of persons with criminal intent who habitually prey on them.

On Monday evening police in detectives in Essequibo began investigating the circumstances surrounding the robbery of a sales clerk who was relieved of an undisclosed amount of cash as he was about to hand same over to his employer at Zorg Market Dam, Essequibo Coast.

The incident took place at approximately 20:10hrs as 40 year old Karan Persaud was closing off his tour of the day’s activities of merchandising.

When he arrived at the home of his employer to hand over the monies, he observed his employer sitting outside at his premises.

Shortly after, both men noticed that a male suspect who was wearing all over black and a tope approaching Persaud with a gun in his hands.

The suspect demanded that he, Persaud hand over the bag which he had in his hand and was about to deliver to his employer.

BIG Smith Crime Watch was told that even after handing over the bag, when the suspect was leaving, he then suddenly turned back and fired a shot in the direction of the unarmed sales clerk which struck him to the hip before making good his escape. The victim was then rushed to the hospital where he was admitted in stable condition.

In Georgetown, Parmanand Ali 25 years old was a little luckier than Persaud from Essequibo. Ali who works as a truck driver was relived of a Samsung Galaxy S8 mobile phone valued approximately one hundred and eighty thousand dollars.

He was accosted by a male dressed in dark clothing and who was reportedly armed with a ‘sliver’ hand gun while in the vicinity of South Road between Orange Walk and Cummings Street at approximately 07:30hrs as he was walking.

BIG Smith Crime Watch was informed that Ali was on his way to work when two male suspects came up to him on a bicycle, the young man who was brandishing the gun too away the mobile phone which Ali had in his pocket before returning to the bicycle and riding off as if nothing had happened.

The police did question a few person but were not able to get any useful information from them, a number of CCTV cameras which are located in the environs are to be reviewed by the police detectives.

Recently. Commissioner of Police Leslie James told the media that he was not ‘necessarily’ bothered about the crime situation when asked about the number and frequency of petty crimes in an around Georgetown.

Two weeks ago when the commissioner was given an opportunity, he sought to clarify that what he meant by his statement but further assured the press that “I am still unbothered”

Public Security Minister when approached to give his sentiments on the statements made by the Top Cop indicated that all crimes should be of concern to everyone.
