February 11, 2025 – The Government of Guyana, through the Ministry of Health, has provided much-needed vision support to residents of Kamwatta, distributing 159 spectacles to elderly individuals and children in the community.

Leading the initiative was Parliamentary Representative for Region One, Minister of Housing and Water Collin Croal, visited the Moruca Sub-region village to oversee the distribution exercise. He was accompanied by Vice Chair Anansha Peters, District Education Officer Orlando Domingo, and other regional officials.

During his remarks, Minister Croal highlighted the progress being made in Kamwatta, emphasizing that initiatives like these are investments in both the older generation and the nation’s future—its children, noting that Education and healthcare are key pillars in building an educated and healthy society.

The program, valued at $2.4 million for Kamwatta alone, was made possible through a partnership with Optique Vision Care.

As part of ongoing healthcare initiatives, the Ministry of Health has been issuing spectacle vouchers to individuals aged 65 and older, as well as children under 18, ensuring accessibility to essential vision care.

Beyond vision care, the government has also made improvements to the Kumaka District Hospital and continues to introduce new programs aimed at supporting the most vulnerable.

Minister Croal reaffirmed the government’s commitment to investing in the well-being of its people and encouraged residents to take advantage of these initiatives.

Looking ahead, plans are in place to upgrade the nursery school and improve the village’s health hut. Residents were also briefed on upcoming initiatives from the 2025 national budget and had the opportunity to voice concerns and suggest solutions for community development.

In addition to the healthcare initiative, Minister Croal donated footballs to the village, reinforcing the government’s commitment to holistic community development.
