November 29, 2024 — The Rotary Club of Georgetown Central has handed over newly refurbished accommodations at Uncle Eddie’s Home in Tucville, Georgetown.

This renovation marks the club’s 40th Anniversary Signature Project, aimed at improving the quality of life for the home’s senior residents.

The upgraded facility was officially handed over yesterday, during a ceremony attended by Rotary Club President Jagdesh Haripershad, Immediate Past President and Project Lead Peter Pompey, Past President Judy Semple-Joseph and Sabita Liddell, representing the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security. Kory and Diane Sellers, retired humanitarian missionaries with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), were also present to celebrate the completion of the project.

The renovation focused on creating a safe, dignified, and environmentally friendly space for residents. The project included upgrades to plumbing and bathroom facilities, installation of new storage cupboards, provision of new beds, and replacement of kitchen utensils and equipment. Additional improvements were made to the potable water system and waste disposal infrastructure.

The expanded project scope included painting the walls and ceilings of the main block and south wing. These upgrades were made possible through $20 million (USD $100,000) in funding from the LDS Church, with additional contributions from Food for the Poor, Chung Global Inc., the Ministry of Public Works, and other donors, bringing the total project cost to $30 million.

President Haripershad highlighted the project as a testament to the Rotary Club’s commitment to Service Above Self. He commended Immediate Past President Pompey for his leadership in transforming the facility and thanked Judy Semple-Joseph for securing critical funding from the LDS Church.

He pointed out that this project reflects the magic of Rotary and its ability to bring communities together and make a difference.

President Haripershad further stated that he hopes that this revitalized space will enhance the well-being of Uncle Eddie’s residents for years to come.

Uncle Eddie’s Home was established in 1975 by Edward Holford, affectionately known as “Uncle Eddie,” to provide care for the elderly.

The facility’s Board President, Yolanda James, expressed gratitude for the renovations and committed to further improving services for residents.

James added that this initiative represents a significant step forward in creating a supportive and nurturing environment for seniors and invited the public and organizations to join them in sustaining and enhancing this facility.

Kory and Diane Sellers, who spearheaded the LDS Church’s involvement, reflected on their commitment to improving living conditions for the elderly, describing the project as a transformative experience.

The project has provided essential amenities to ensure the comfort and safety of the residents, including:

  • Upgraded plumbing and bathroom facilities
  • Improved potable water system
  • New beds and bedding
  • Updated kitchen utensils and equipment
  • Enhanced waste management and landscaping

As the Rotary Club of Georgetown Central celebrates its 40th anniversary, the successful completion of this project demonstrates its unwavering dedication to uplifting communities across Guyana.
