‘Jango’ found guilty in 2014 Boxing Day stabbing

November 21 2024 – Nearly a decade after a vicious Boxing Day attack, Ganesh Dhanraj, also known as “Jango,” has been found guilty of felonious wounding for a stabbing that left the victim fighting for his life.

On December 26, 2014, Clinton Babooram was standing in front of a rum shop across from his home when Dhanraj ran toward him with a knife.

Without warning, Dhanraj stabbed Babooram in the groin and fled the scene, leaving him bleeding profusely and unconscious.

Babooram was rushed to the St Joseph’s Mercy Hospital, but due to a critical shortage of blood for transfusion, he was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).

There, he underwent emergency surgery to save his life. He spent three weeks in the hospital recovering from his injuries.

The case, which was prosecuted by attorneys Muntaz Ali and Christopher Belfield, initially charged Dhanraj with attempted murder.

However, after careful deliberation, the jury returned a guilty verdict on the lesser charge of felonious wounding.

Dhanraj, represented by defence attorney Adrian Thompson, is set to be sentenced on December 16, 2024, by Justice Navindra Singh at the Demerara High Court.
