Police are investigating a case of attempted murder that took place yesterday, at Imbaimadai Landing, Upper Mazaruni River.

According to a police report, the incident involved James Thomas, known as “Wormie,” a 44-year-old miner, who was allegedly set on fire by a fellow miner during an altercation.

According to initial reports, Thomas and the 53-year-old suspect, both residents of Imbaimadai Landing, were consuming alcohol together when a dispute arose.

The argument reportedly began after Thomas took the suspect’s quarter bottle of High Wine and refused to return it. In a fit of rage, the suspect doused Thomas with the High Wine and set him on fire.

Thomas suffered severe burns and was quickly transported to the Imbaimadai Health Post before being transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital for further treatment. Medical professionals have classified his injuries as second-degree burns.

The suspect has been arrested and is currently in police custody as the investigation continues.
