More than 2000 Karaudarnau Residents Benefit from Improved Water Access

Amidst an extended dry spell gripping the nation and depleting water resources, efforts to ensure a sustainable water supply for citizens have gained urgency.

In response, Minister Susan Rodrigues, currently undertaking a two-day outreach to the Deep South Rupununi in Region Nine, commissioned the Karaudarnau Water Supply System.

Accompanied by Hinterland Service Director Mr. Ramchand Jailall and a team of technical officers, Minister Rodrigues oversaw the inauguration of the upgraded system, which serves over 2000 households, schools, government offices, and health centers in the villages of Karaudarnau, Awarewaunau, and Rupunau.

The Karaudarnau Water Supply System underwent significant enhancements in 2023, including the drilling of two wells, installation of elevated storage facilities, and expansion of the distribution network. These upgrades have increased the system’s coverage to reach 80% of the village, with new distribution lines and elevated storage facilitating service connections for an additional 120 households. The total investment for this comprehensive upgrade amounted to $61.60 million.

During the outreach, Minister Rodrigues engaged in an interactive session with residents, discussing various sector matters and government interventions aimed at improving their quality of life. Residents were informed of ongoing initiatives geared towards addressing community needs and enhancing overall well-being.

As Guyana grapples with water scarcity challenges exacerbated by climate-related factors, initiatives like the Karaudarnau Water Supply System upgrade play a crucial role in ensuring access to this vital resource for communities across the nation.
