Guyana Advocates for Second International Decade for People of African Descent

In a resounding show of support, Guyana has thrown its weight behind calls for a second International Decade for People of African Descent.

This stance came from none other than Minister of Tourism, Industry, and Commerce Oneidge Walrond, as she addressed delegates at the Opening of the Third Session of the Permanent Forum on People of African Descent.

A ststement from the Tourism Ministry indicates that since its proclamation by the UN General Assembly in December 2013, the International Decade for the People of African Descent has spanned from 2015 to 2024.

However, amidst growing advocacy, there have been widespread appeals for an extension of this pivotal period.

“Guyana eagerly anticipates contributing to the ongoing efforts aimed at enhancing the conditions of people of African descent, both by bolstering the work of this Forum and by persisting in the development and execution of initiatives that will significantly benefit Guyanese of African Descent,” Minister Walrond articulated passionately.

Emphasizing Guyana’s unique status as a multicultural and multi-ethnic society, Minister Walrond underscored the nation’s commitment to ensuring the utmost quality of life for its entire populace.

Moreover, she shed light on Guyana’s steadfast dedication to the pursuit of reparations for the descendants of enslaved Africans, a cause that the nation remains unwaveringly devoted to. Within this framework, Minister Walrond highlighted the establishment of a National Reparations Committee, aligning with a comprehensive 10-point plan agreed upon by CARICOM.

In a gesture of solidarity, Minister Walrond extended warm congratulations on behalf of CARICOM to Dr. June Soomer upon assuming the prestigious Chair of the United Nations Permanent Forum for People of African Descent. Dr. Soomer’s appointment was hailed as a significant milestone, with Minister Walrond lauding her as “a distinguished daughter/citizen of the Caribbean Community.”

With Guyana’s unequivocal support and active engagement, the momentum for a second International Decade for People of African Descent continues to gather strength on the global stage, signaling a collective commitment towards promoting equity, justice, and empowerment for all.
