Fire has completely gutted the building which served as living quarters for 30 officers the Guyana Prison Services at Parade Street Georgetown.

The origin of the fire is still unknown at this time.

The Guyana Fire Service arrived at the location with three water bowsers and a hydraulic platform. Nevertheless, firefighters encountered difficulties in accessing water from a nearby hydrant, leading them to utilise an open water source at the Lamaha canal.

Students attending nearby schools including Chase Academy and Westfield Primary and Nursery were evacuated within minutes and housed at the Police Sports Club.

Director of Prisons Nicklon Elliot in an invited comment stated that a facility has been procured to temporarily accommodate the impacted prison officers. Concurrently, he assured that arrangements have been implemented to safeguard the well-being of the affected officers.

He mentioned that all individuals in the building were successfully evacuated. The building was equipped with fire extinguishers and officers utilized them during the incident.
