Housing Ministry rolls out plans for Hinterland communities at Toshaos Conference.

Toshoas and village leaders have been updated on the developments and programs and policies which their respective villages are expected to benefit from in the Housing and Water sectors.
The Ministry’s work program for the Hinterland, was outlined as more than 200 village leaders continue to meet at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre for the National Toshaos Council’s Conference, 2023. This year’s Conference is being held under the theme”Advancing Sustainable Village Development in a Low Carbon Economy”.
The Ministry’s team included; Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal, Minster within the Ministry, Susan Rodrigues, Permanent Secretary Mr. Bishram Kuppen, GWI’s Hinterland Services Director-Mr. Ramchand Jailall, Hinterland Housing Engineer-Mr. Cy Rodrigues and other technical staff.
Toshoas were told of the Ministry’s plan to increase Hinterland water coverage to 100% by 2025. Currently the coverage for access to potable water stands at 75%.
According to the Ministry’s presentation, the administration has invested more than $2 Billion for Hinterland water from 2020, to date with another $1.4 B set aside for work in 2023.
Already more than 40 new wells have been drilled and completed to provide access to approximately 15,000 persons. Another 40 new wells are expected to be completed in hinterland communities in 2024 and these will be done in, Regions One, Two, Seven, Eight and Nine.
Meanwhile, under the first phase Hinterland Housing Program, 300 homes will be constructed in Regions One, Seven, Eight and Nine.
In the first phase the villages of Kokerite, Warapoka, Hamimaruni, Smith Creek, Arukamai, Imbotero, Savannah Blackwater, Parabara, Shea, Yurong Paru, Tiger Pond, Shiriri, Rupunau, Quatata, Crash Water, Yakarinta, Campbell Town, Karisparu, Quebenang, Ominaik, Isseneru, and Kanruma will benefit from the housing program.
Additionally, under a special commitment made by President, His Excellency Dr. Irfaan Ali, 20 houses will be constructed in Sand Creek, Region Nine.
