Mahesh Deochand, 19, of Mosquito Hall, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara, was attacked and chopped on Sunday and sustained a fractured skull as a result.

The young man’s mother, Neranie Sanichar told Big Smith News Watch that the incident stemmed from the destruction of a stall she rented to sell on Easter Monday at Unity Beach. At about 21:00hrs on Sunday, Sanichar said she received a call from another resident that there was an issue with their stall.

So, she along with her nephew and Deochand ventured out to the beach.

When they arrived, Sanichar recalled seeing a big fire but did not know it was her stall being burnt. The woman stated that when her nephew inquired about what was happening, the couple, who she claimed set the stall on fire started to beat him.

Sanichar said she quickly told her son who was on an electric bike to go home and call his father.

“While my son riding going home, the same man that break the stand, his son Gavin run out from behind a lantern post and chop my son in he head and then drag him of the bike,” Sanichar explained.

The woman said she started screaming for help and neighbours ran to her assistance. Deochand was rushed to the Mahaicony Hospital while Sanichar went to the Mahaica Station to file a report.

While there, she received a call that her son’s condition had worsened and that he was being transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital. While at the hospital the family was told his skull had fractured during the attack.

He spent three days hospitalised while the suspect was arrested.

Sanichar is hoping that justice will be served and claims that the couple have been harassing her family for years.

“Every year we selling there and they always get a problem, but I never expect them to burn it this time.”

Sanichar said she paid $15000 to get the spot to sell from the Neighbourhood Democratic Council and received a pass to use to beach.
