Press Association elections set for May

Media practitioners will be given the opportunity to elect new Executive members of the Guyana Press Association (GPA) in May, 2023. This was announced by the GPA via email on Monday. An official date for the elections will be published in the print media.

The last executive body of the GPA was elected in 2018 for a period of two years. GPA wrote in its email that the protracted 2020 elections and the COVID-19 pandemic “no doubt affected the holding of our elections.”

“Given the circumstances at the time, the executive took another decision to further postpone any meeting that would have violated the public health regulations,” GPA added.

Notwithstanding the challenges, the GPA Executive remained active throughout this period, engaging its membership on various issues. Importantly, several virtual workshops were executed.

At its most recent meeting, the Executive took a decision to hold elections for a new executive in May 2023.

GPA reminded members to “ensure that they are in good financial standing with GPA to ensure their full voting participation at this election.”

The current Executive members are Nazima Raghubir, Svetlana Marshall, Rawle Toney and Denis Chabrol.  Other members of the press who were elected to serve at the helm of the Association have resigned over the years.

Established in 1945, the GPA is an organisation that serves the interests of Guyana’s media workers.
