In what can best be described as forward thinking, construction of the new Schoonard to Crane West Demerara Four Lane Highway will have an Emergency Lane.

The Emergency Lane which is listed as part of the contract is expected to be used by first responders, police and fire tenders responding to emergency calls.

The feature will be a new look for Guyana which has largely narrow roads that are shared by both regular commuters and emergency vehicles, sometimes ending up in a bottle neck.

Contracts for the construction were signed on Wednesday by contractors who will be working in eight separate lots or sections.

Contracts to the sum of GYD $11.8 Billion Guyana Dollars were sighed at the Arthur Chung Conference Center Wednesday morning between the contractors and the Ministry of Housing and Water.

VR Construction Inc., Avinash, Contracting & Scrap Metal Inc., L-Heureuse Construction and Services Inc., GuyAmerica Construction Inc., AJM Enterprise, Vals Construction, Puran Bros. Disposal Inc. And JS Guyana Inc. will be working on the project.

Once contractors stick to their scope of works, do the job properly and within the timeframe specified by the contracts they signed, residents and those traversing West Demerara should experience an ease in the traffic situation in Region 3.

Asphaltic Concrete Access Road, Culverts, Drains, Road Signage and Marking, Dual carriageway, Emergency Lanes, Median and Bridges are among the scope of works to be done.

Minister of Housing Collin Croal who was present at the signing asked contractors to commit fully to the project as he said the works and the road will energize economic activities in Region 3.

The minister told the contractors that much consideration was put into the project and that a vehicle and boat were procured to specifically monitor the works both by land and water.

A call was also made for standard to be of key interests to the contractors who will be working on the project.
