‘Umbrella dread’ remanded for businesswoman’s murder

Following the murder of Businesswoman Denise Vieira on October 13, 2021, Marvin Verbeke called ‘Umbrella Dread’ 33 year old was yesterday remanded to prison after he was charged with the offence.

Verbeke a pork knocker of Pepper Hill, Mahdia is said to be the reputed husband of the woman and also claimed that on the day the woman was found, it was him who discovered her body motionless in the shop.

He appeared at the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court before His Worship Magistrate Sunil Scarce via zoom and was remanded to prison until January 12, 2022.

47-year-old businesswoman Denise Vieira was discovered dead in her home in Pepper Hill, Mahdia last week.

The police said that Vieira resided in a flat concrete structure and operated a small grocery shop in the said building while her reputed husband, resides in the said yard in a wooden structure separated by a fence.

The deceased’s neighbour recalled hearing the Vieira saying loudly, “Get out my (expletive) place, leff me alone,” sometime prior.

The body of the deceased was examined for marks of violence which were recorded by the police.

The suspect was contacted, told of the allegation, cautioned and he denied. He was arrested and placed into custody, the police said.
