A 21-year-old woman who is accused of collecting $1.2M from a man in a bogus land sale deal, was on Monday charged.

Sudarshani Ramsingh of 84 Gordon Street, Kitty, Georgetown appeared before Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs- Marcus in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

She was not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that on September 4, 2019, at Gordon Street, Kitty, Georgetown, with intent to defraud, she obtained $1.2M from Talish Parsotam by falsely pretending that she was employed at the Central Housing and Planning Authority and that she was in a position to sell a plot of land located at Cummings Lodge, Greater, Georgetown, knowing same to be false.

Ramsingh who has pending matters of a similar nature before the courts was granted $75, 000 bail. She is due for another court appearance on June 28, 2021.

Facts presented by the court prosecutor stated that that Parsotam saw an advertisement for the sale of a land located at Cummings Lodge.

He then contacted the accused indicating his interest in purchasing the land. Ramsingh then took the victim and showed him a plot of land and told him she was employed at the Ministry of Housing.

The court heard the woman told the man that the plot of land was repossessed and valued at $2.5M. The victim made a payment of $1.2M as requested by Ramsingh and the remainder was expected to be paid when the title is being handed over.

The woman later contacted the man indicating that she was in possession of the allocation letter and demanded an additional $500,000. The man refused to pay the sum and requested to see the document.

He was never shown the document and shortly after was unable to contact the woman via phone. He reported the matter to the police.

An investigation was conducted which revealed that the woman was never employed at the Housing Ministry and that she was not in a position to sell the plot of land.

She was arrested and charged with the offence.
