January 24, 2026
A multi-agency operation in Region Nine, on Saturday morning, was aborted after the army vessel ferrying personnel for the operation sank just after 08:00hrs, at Karasabi Village, South Pakaraimas.
BIG Smith News Watch learnt that Deputy Commander of Region 9 Superintendent Stephen Harris, and other personnel from the Guyana Defense Force and Guyana Geology and Mines Commission were on board the vessel at the time of the incident.
Police sources in Region Nine reported that the vessel began taking in water shortly after pulling off from the docks.
The vessel, an aluminum one, is owned by the Guyana Defense Force and was being operated by a GDF Corporal when the team attempted to leave for their operation along the Rupununi River.
As the vessel went under, the men were forced to swim back to shore. They managed to do so successfully and without any reports of injuries or death.
