7-Y-O Dies After Iron Gate Mishap at Taj Mahal Hotel

January 13, 2025- A seven year old girl lost her life after a metal gate weighing approximately 250lbs fell on her at the Taj Mahal Hotel and Bar in Corriverton Berbice, on Sunday evening.
According to a police report, the iron sliding gate reportedly fell on Kareena, causing fatal injuries. She was pronounced dead at the Skeldon Public Hospital shortly after.

Kareena had been living with her aunt, 40-year-old Maharanie Ramnarine, who is the manager of the hotel and bar. According to Maharanie, she had cared for the child since she was four months old, after Kareena’s biological mother abandoned her.
On the evening of the incident, Maharanie stated she was preparing to retire to her room when she heard Kareena call out to her. Turning around, she saw the heavy, hollow-section metal gate had fallen on the child. Maharanie and others lifted the gate off Kareena and rushed her to the hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries.
Police officers responding to the report examined Kareena’s body, observing a cut on her forehead. The scene at the hotel was photographed and processed, and CCTV footage from the premises is being reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation. Statements have also been taken from witnesses.
