September 23 2025 – A 19-year-old woman from Baramita, North West District, has been charged with the murder of her reputed partner, 20-year-old miner Kevin Smith.

The accused, Naderia James, was arrested by police at Baramita following the fatal stabbing which occurred on September 18, 2025.

She appeared today before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh at the Port Kaituma Magistrate’s Court via Zoom, where the charge was read. James was not required to plead to the indictable offence and was remanded to prison until October 14, 2025.

Investigations revealed that James and Smith had been living together in a makeshift wooden and plastic camp for about a year. On the day of the incident, James allegedly returned home after consuming alcohol and found Smith lying in a hammock.

According to police, Smith armed himself with a cutlass and reportedly struck James on her shoulder and hand. In response, James is said to have pulled a handmade knife from her waist and stabbed him in the chest.

Smith stumbled out of the camp and collapsed in nearby bushes, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Following the stabbing, James fled to the Baramita Police Station, where she provided a statement about the incident.

The case has drawn significant attention in the North West District, as investigators continue to probe the circumstances leading to the deadly altercation.
