MLGRD, MoH Collaborate on Modern Landfill Development

September 23, 2025 –The Government of Guyana has intensified efforts to modernize the country’s waste management system with plans to establish sustainable landfill sites across the ten administrative regions.
The initiative, led jointly by the Ministry of Housing and Water and the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, aims to address the challenges of population growth, rapid housing development, and urban expansion while ensuring environmental protection and improved public health.
A high-level inter-agency meeting was recently convened, bringing together ministers, technical experts, and senior administrators to map out the project. In attendance were Minister of Housing, Collin Croal; Minister within the Ministry of Housing, Vanessa Benn; Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Priya Manickchand; as well as permanent secretaries, planning officials, and executives from the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CHPA) and the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission.
Discussions focused on identifying suitable sites for landfill development, taking into account population density, land availability, accessibility, environmental impact, and long-term sustainability. The meeting also examined weaknesses in the current system, highlighting the urgent need for modern sanitary facilities that meet international standards.
Authorities stressed that landfill projects are more than just waste disposal sites; they are essential infrastructure for healthy, resilient, and sustainable communities. With new housing schemes being rolled out nationwide, proper waste management is being prioritized alongside other supporting services.
The government underscored that the project will rely on close inter-agency collaboration to ensure it is technically sound, comprehensive, and future-proof. Over the coming months, further technical assessments and stakeholder consultations will be carried out to move the initiative forward.
By pooling resources and expertise, this collaborative approach reflects Guyana’s broader vision for sustainable development, where urban planning, public health, and environmental protection are aligned. Once completed, the modern landfills are expected to deliver cleaner, safer, and more environmentally responsible waste management solutions, improving the quality of life for citizens across the country.
