January 9, 2025 — Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, led a groundbreaking ceremony yesterday to mark the commencement of the Kaneville Secondary School construction project.

This transformative initiative, valued at G$1.2 billion, is set to serve over 500 students in the Kaneville-Grove area on the East Bank of Demerara.

The event, held in Kaneville, saw the attendance of several dignitaries, including Regional Education Officer for Region 4, Ms. Keane Adams, Senior Education Officer Mr. Colwyn Delph, and other officials.

During her address, Minister Manickchand emphasized the Government’s commitment to equitable access to education.

She highlighted that the Kaneville Secondary School is a key component of the administration’s mission to achieve universal secondary education and provide modern, nurturing learning environments for every child.

The school’s development underscores the Government’s dedication to transforming the educational landscape and empowering communities through investment in critical infrastructure.

The state-of-the-art facility aims to significantly enhance educational opportunities in the region, ensuring access to high-quality learning environments. The project, with a total cost of G$1,206,255,197, will officially begin on January 12, 2025, with an estimated construction timeline of 11 months. Following the completion, a three-month defects liability period will ensure the highest quality standards are met.

The construction is being managed by Origin Investments, the project consultant, and involves the collaboration of multiple local contractors. Key contributors include:

  • A. Ograsein & Sons General Contracting: G$74,386,975.
  • Sheriff Construction Inc.: Responsible for several lots, including external works, valued at over G$400 million.
  • NP Contracting & Transportation Services, JD’s Construction Company, D&S Construction, JK Enterprise Inc., and You Nailed It Construction: Handling various aspects of the project.

All contracts were awarded through a public bidding process overseen by the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board in compliance with the Public Procurement Act.
