United States Ambassador to Guyana, Nicole D. Theriot, addressed attendees at the NYPD Welcome and Signing Ceremony and press conference held at the Guyana Police Headquarters, Eve Leary.

The event marked the beginning of a new training partnership between the New York City Police Department (NYPD) and the Guyana Police Force (GPF) in support of the GPF’s 2022-2026 Strategic Management Plan.

Ambassador Theriot expressed her honor in welcoming the NYPD delegation, led by First Deputy Commissioner Kinsella, to Guyana.

She outlined the objectives of the training program, emphasizing its holistic and strategic approach to enhancing law enforcement capabilities in Guyana.

Over the coming month, the NYPD and GPF will collaborate to develop curriculum focusing on areas such as homicide and gender-based violence investigations, and community-policing responses.

The U.S. Embassy and the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) pledged their support for the partnership, ensuring necessary funding for the successful implementation of the training program. Ambassador Theriot announced plans for the NYPD to return to Guyana in the coming months to commence the training program, with reciprocal opportunities for GPF officers to participate in a practical study tour in New York later in the year.

Highlighting the importance of the partnership in addressing shared security challenges, Ambassador Theriot underscored the commitment of the United States to Guyana under the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative. She emphasized that the initiative would contribute to GPF’s strategic transformation, foster inclusivity within the criminal justice system, and attract international investment as Guyana continues to develop its economy.

In closing, Ambassador Theriot expressed gratitude for the collaboration and conveyed her optimism for the future of the partnership between Guyana, the United States, and the NYPD in advancing law enforcement training and security objectives.
