Glenton Redmond, the 22-year-old motorcyclist who was charged last year with causing death by dangerous driving, was on Tuesday, found guilty of the crime.

Magistrate Ruchelle Liverpool, before whom he was on trial at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Courts, found that he drove motorcycle CK 7849 in a manner dangerous to the public on April 10, 2022, thereby causing the death of Makida Quick, 14.

Redmond of ‘E’ Field, Sophia, Greater Georgetown was initially charged on April 13, 2022 with the offence. He was also charged with being an unlicensed driver, and driving the vehicle without insurance and fitness.

He was found guilty on all charges on Tuesday and was jailed for three years by the presiding magistrate. The matters were prosecuted by Police Sergeant Visram Ramjattan.

Police Headquarters had reported that on April 10, 2022 at around 12:30 hrs, at Section ‘E’ Field, Sophia, Quick was on her bicycle riding south along the eastern side of the Section ‘E’ Field main access road, whilst Redmond was riding in the same direction and speeding on his motorcycle CK 7840 which he allegedly lost control of and struck her.

As a result of the impact, Quick was flung some distance into the air before falling into a nearby drain and Redmond fell on the road. They were both picked up and transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where Quick was pronounced dead on arrival.

Investigations revealed that not only was Redmond unlicensed but that he also carried away the motorcycle without its owner’s permission
