Two Shot Dead During Foiled Supermarket Robbery in Georgetown

–Two other accomplices flee the scene as police launch investigation
April 9, 2025 — Police have confirmed that a foiled armed robbery at Jai Jai Supermarket on Hadfield Street ended fatally for two suspects on Tuesday night when an armed security guard confronted the group, opening fire and killing two of the intruders.
The deceased have been identified as 15-year-old Tyrese Adams of Pineapple Street, East Ruimveldt, and 22-year-old Orwin Garraway of East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme.
According to police, the two were among four armed men who attempted to rob the Chinese-operated supermarket, managed by 31-year-old Gan Zhang, at around 7:30 p.m.
Initial police investigations revealed that the four men, all reportedly of African descent, entered the premises with handguns. Two suspects entered the supermarket dressed in dark clothing with black ski masks, each targeting one of the two cashier booths located on the eastern and western sides of the ground floor. One pointed a firearm at a cashier, demanding cash, while the other began ransacking the second booth.
At the time, a 35-year-old armed security guard was on duty inside the store, equipped with a 9mm pistol and 15 rounds of ammunition. The guard intervened, prompting the suspects to flee. One collapsed inside the supermarket, while the other made it about 15 feet outside before falling to the ground on the roadway.
As the security guard exited the building, he observed the remaining two suspects who had been stationed outside the supermarket. They fled west along Hadfield Street and remain at large.
Two Haojue motorcycles — one bearing registration number CP 623 and the other without a number plate — were found parked in front of the supermarket with keys in their ignitions, suspected to be the getaway vehicles.
Emergency Medical Technicians arrived at the scene and pronounced both suspects dead. Dr. Kellman of the Georgetown Public Hospital confirmed the deaths.
Police recovered a Glock 17 pistol with eight matching rounds near one of the deceased. Inside the supermarket, investigators collected one live 9mm round, thirteen spent shells, and three bullet fragments. An additional spent shell and three fragments were found outside on the road.
Postmortem examinations are pending. Preliminary examinations revealed Garraway sustained gunshot wounds to his ribs, hands, nose, and shoulder, while Adams had injuries to his shoulder, stomach, lower back, and hip.
CCTV footage from the supermarket has been extracted and reviewed. Police have questioned several individuals and are continuing efforts to locate the two remaining suspects.
The bodies of Garraway and Adams have been taken to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. The investigation remains ongoing.
