Tuschen Sec to Host GOAL Night Classes, Branch of UG Medical Sciences

August 20 2025
The newly commissioned $930 million Tuschen Secondary School on the East Bank of Essequibo is set to play a transformative role in expanding access to education in Region Three.
Alongside serving 800 students during the day, the modern facility will also host night classes for beneficiaries of the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL) scholarship programme and become a branch of the University of Guyana’s College of Medical Sciences.
President Dr Irfaan Ali, speaking at the commissioning ceremony on Wednesday, said Tuschen will be outfitted with full technological support and dedicated space with proper internet access to accommodate GOAL scholars pursuing diplomas and degrees in the evenings. Since 2020, more than 39,000 Guyanese have benefitted from these free scholarships.
In addition, the President announced that the facility will serve as a regional hub for medical education. Students in Region Three who were previously unable to access spaces at UG’s College of Medical Sciences will soon be able to pursue programmes closer to home. Currently, the College offers 17 medical programmes, but of 206 applications from the region, only 86 students were admitted.
With the expansion to Tuschen, an additional 144 students will now have the opportunity to study in this field.
The government also plans to involve senior doctors, nurses, and technicians from Region Three’s health system as lecturers at the new medical branch.
This move not only increases teaching capacity but also provides professionals with opportunities to supplement their income through tax-incentivised secondary employment.
The Tuschen Secondary School is part of the wider effort to achieve universal secondary education and provide world-class opportunities for Guyanese students. With facilities such as fully equipped science laboratories, research centres, and modern classrooms, the school is designed to serve both secondary students and the wider community as a hub for higher learning and professional training.
