August 20 2025
Truck driver David Ragnauth, who fled the scene after fatally hitting 22-year-old pedestrian Alex Persaud on August 13, is scheduled to appear in court to answer a charge of causing death by dangerous driving.
According to police reports, Persaud was crossing the Supply Public Road, East Bank Demerara, when Ragnauth, reportedly speeding, collided with another truck before running over him. The driver then fled, abandoning his locked vehicle at Sarah Johanna.
After days on the run, Ragnauth was arrested in the vicinity of the Demerara Harbour Bridge during a police sting operation. Investigators say he is also likely to face additional charges.
In a twist of events, both the accused and the victim had been slated to appear in court on August 18 in relation to a prior altercation.
