April 9 2024- Orwin Garraway, one of the two men fatally shot during a foiled armed robbery at a Chinese supermarket on Hadfield Street last Tuesday night, was a known repeat offender with multiple pending armed robbery charges.
Garraway, 22, of Lot 592 East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, had been previously remanded in November 2023 on six counts of armed robbery. He had pleaded not guilty and was expected to return to court on December 6 of that year.
According to previous court reports, Garraway and an accomplice were accused of committing a series of robberies in Georgetown.
On October 24, 2023, they allegedly robbed a CMC Security officer of a $250,000 shotgun, stole a $50,000 cellphone from a Chinese national, and took $800,000 in cash from another individual, identified as Linden Lin.
Additionally, on November 2, 2023, the duo reportedly robbed another Chinese national of $800,000 in cash and valuables totaling approximately $1 million.
They were also accused of robbing a man named Clive Baird of a cellphone valued at $75,000.
Despite pleading not guilty to all six charges, the prosecution had CCTV footage related to at least one of the incidents. The court was further informed that Garraway had seven similar charges pending at the Diamond Magistrate’s Court.
Garraway and 15-year-old Tyrese Adams of Pineapple Street, East Ruimveldt, were both shot dead by an armed security guard during Tuesday night’s attempted robbery.
The two had entered the supermarket, held two cashiers at gunpoint, and attempted to flee after a struggle with one of the victims. However, they were intercepted by the on-duty guard, who discharged his weapon, fatally wounding both suspects.
Police have confirmed that two other accomplices managed to escape the scene on foot. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
