Poultry Project Launched in Loo Creek to Boost Local Agriculture

April 8, 2025 — Agriculture Minister, Zulfikar Mustapha, on Tuesday launched a major poultry project in Loo Creek, aimed at empowering local farmers and fostering sustainable agricultural development in the region.
The initiative, carried out in partnership with the Loo Creek Seventh Day Adventist Church, is set to benefit dozens of farmers from the community and neighboring areas by providing critical inputs and technical guidance to develop viable poultry businesses.

Speaking during a community meeting, Minister Mustapha emphasized the government’s broader goal of transforming Guyana into a leading food producer in the Caribbean. He noted that targeted investments are being made to help rural communities like Loo Creek achieve greater self-sufficiency in both crop and livestock production.
As part of the poultry initiative, 50,000 chicks will be distributed to local farmers over the next two weeks. Officers from the Guyana Livestock Development Authority (GLDA) will work closely with recipients to ensure the birds are reared under optimal conditions.
In addition to the poultry program, support will be extended for crop cultivation. The National Agriculture Research and Extension Institute (NAREI) will assist with soil analysis and provide technical advice to help farmers grow crops suitable for the region’s conditions. Planting materials and other essential inputs will also be made available.
The project is part of a wider push to enhance food security and generate economic opportunities in hinterland and rural communities. Loo Creek, located along the Linden/Soesdyke Highway between Long Creek and Kairuni, is set to become a model for agricultural transformation under this initiative.
