Secret Service Director Resigns Amid Outrage Over Trump Assassination Attempt

U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned on Tuesday following widespread outrage over the agency’s failure to prevent the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania campaign rally earlier this month.

Cheatle’s resignation, first reported by NBC News citing sources, came a day after she faced severe criticism from members of a House committee during a hearing on the Secret Service’s actions leading up to Trump’s July 13 rally in Butler Township.

In a letter to agency staff obtained by The Washington Post, Cheatle expressed her decision to step down, stating, “In light of recent events, it is with a heavy heart that I have made the difficult decision to step down as your Director.”

She emphasized taking “full responsibility” for the incident and noted the intense pressure from lawmakers of both parties to resign.

“This incident does not define us,” Cheatle reassured her staff. “I do not want my calls for resignation to be a distraction from the great work each and every one of you do towards our vital mission.”

President Biden issued a statement commending Cheatle’s decision, saying, “As a leader, it takes honor, courage, and incredible integrity to take full responsibility for an organization tasked with one of the most challenging jobs in public service. We all know what happened that day can never happen again.”
