Police comes under fire from 18-Y-O and others in stolen car
The car the men were in at the time and which was stolen a few days ago
Police in Essequibo may have been able to break up a gang that has been wreaking havoc and causing intense discomfort for residents with a number of burglaries and larceny over the last couple of weeks.
On Sunday evening just after 20:00hrs, a police patrol noticed a car, PWW 8236, which was stolen three days ago, neatly sprayed over but carrying the same registration plates.
The car, which was being driven with its headlamps off, also caused the alert ranks to become very suspicious and they decided to give chase.
It was during that chase that occupants of the car opened fire on the police who returned fire, resulting in the driver of the car losing control and the vehicle coming to a stop on the parapet. A number of persons exited and fled on foot, leaving the driver – an 18-year-old – behind.
Police sources have indicated that of the persons who ran away, they were able to identify one of them, since he is no stranger to the police.
The driver, a resident of Red Village, Onderneeming, was carrying a haversack at the time, and that was promptly confiscated by the police who carried out a search of it, the car, and on the person of the suspect.
The search revealed one pair of gloves, one crowbar, one knife, one piece of jewelry with initials, one mask and a plastic strap.
He was taken into police custody while the vehicle was escorted to a police station and lodged.
Investigations after ongoing.
