The Guyana Police Force’s new electronic monitoring speed system on the Mandela to Eccles four-lane highway has recorded over 16,000 breaches of the speed limit and over 36,000 drivers failing to wear their seatbelts.

The new highway’s speed limit is 30Kmph at the roundabout, 50Kmph in residential areas, and 80Kmph in open spaces. President Dr. Irfaan Ali had indicated that an E-ticketing system will ve implemented for errant drivers.

In a statement, the Traffic Department reported that sixteen thousand four hundred and fifty-three (16 453) drivers drove above the speed limit and thirty-six thousand four hundred and seventy-nine (36 479) drivers failed to wear seatbelts when traversing the Highway during the month of October 2022.

Drivers are reminded that Speeding and Failing to wear a Seatbelt are Offences according to Section 34 (1) and Section 45 E (3) of the Motor vehicle and Road Traffic Act 51:02 Laws of Guyana respectively, as such drivers are cautioned to adhere to speed limits and wear seatbelt. Drivers Failing to comply will be prosecuted.
