OPR investigating death of prisoner found hanging in lockups

The Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) has launched an investigation into the death of 44-year-old Hemat Kumar Mohamed of De Groot-Enkline, Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara, who died while in police custody at the Leonora Police Station lockups on Saturday.
According to police, the incident occurred between 10:45 hrs and 11:24 hrs. Mohamed had been detained in connection with the alleged murder of 46-year-old Shavannie Hanoman of De Groot-Enkline, Uitvlugt.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Mohamed was found hanging from the window grill inside the lockups using an item of clothing.
He was immediately escorted to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by the attending doctor.
The Office of Professional Responsibility has since commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the prisoner’s death. Investigations remain ongoing.
