The Guyana Police Force has issued a statement regarding recent allegations of extortion by its officers at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.

See full statement below:

28th September 2025

“The Guyana Police Force (GPF) confirms that an allegation has been made that police ranks at Cheddi Jagan International Airport demanded money from a passenger in order to release her lawful items.

CCTV footage and other evidence support the claim. The officers involved have been placed under close arrest while the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) carries out a full investigation.

The Government of Guyana has instructed that from Monday September 29th, 2025, all law enforcement officers operating at any port of entry, whether at airports or other border points, will be required to wear body cameras as a measure to enhance accountability and transparency.

The GPF has zero tolerance for corruption. Any officer found guilty of extortion or bribery will face the full force of the law.

The public is reminded that no payment of any kind is required to clear lawful items through CJIA or any other port. If anyone is asked for money, report it immediately to the nearest police authority.”
