The Ministry of Education officially launched its “Math Intervention” initiative today (September 10, 2024), at the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE) in Turkeyen.

This transformative program aims to revolutionize the way students engage with mathematics, offering targeted support and personalized learning experiences to help overcome challenges and inspire a love for the subject.

Fifty educators from various regions have been selected as monitors to visit schools across the country, working closely with teachers in the mathematics department to implement this focused initiative.

Mahendra Sharma, Education Officer of the Math Unit at the National Centre for Educational Resource Development (NCERD), emphasized that the program is designed to cater to diverse learning needs.

This initiative seeks to offer innovative teaching methods, ensuring each student has the opportunity to reach their full potential, Sharma stated.

Chief Education Officer Saddam Hussain highlighted the practical approach of the initiative, explaining that a diagnostic test will be administered to assess students’ current math skills.

Hussain explained that this is not just about giving resources; it’s a very pragmatic way to address the issue. Selected schools will have additional classes based on the diagnostic results, and the ministry, along with the monitors, will decide the way forward on a school-by-school basis.

Minister of Education Priya Manickchand further outlined the initiative’s goals, particularly for short-term results with fourth and fifth formers, while also targeting lower grade levels.

She added that the ministry is providing resources such as textbooks, scientific calculators, graph books, geometry sets, and past exam papers to support the initiative.

The Minister stated that additionally, a hotline, 736-MATH, has been established to assist anyone with math-related inquiries, and a new website offers quizzes and self-tests to help students track their progress. Standardized quizzes and tests will be used to identify areas of weakness and provide continuous support.
