MLGRD Launches Citywide Cleanup Campaign

October 1, 2025 – The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development has launched a citywide cleanup campaign in Georgetown as part of the Government’s national beautification project. The initiative began Tuesday evening with senior officials of the Ministry leading the exercise.
Among those present were Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Priya Manickchand; Minister within the Ministry, Pauline Sukhai; Director General, Anand Persaud; Permanent Secretary, Mr. Miguel Choo-Kang; Deputy Permanent Secretary (Administration), Dr. Josh Kanhai, along with other senior officials.

As part of the launch, Minister Manickchand visited the Stabroek Market after 6:00PM to engage directly with vendors. Vendors shared that while they are committed to keeping their environment clean, the lack of adequate resources and facilities for proper garbage disposal remains a significant challenge. They expressed that with the necessary support, littering in and around the market could be drastically reduced.
The Ministry said this activity represents the beginning of intensified efforts to restore and maintain cleanliness across the capital city, reinforcing the Government’s broader vision of creating a more beautiful, safe, and sustainable environment for all Guyanese.
Officials added that collaboration with stakeholders, vendors, and residents will remain a key part of the campaign, with an emphasis on equipping communities with the resources necessary for proper waste management practices.
