Min. Mustapha targets agricultural expansion in Laluni

Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha has outlined a series of interventions aimed at expanding agricultural production in Laluni and surrounding communities along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway.
During a meeting with farmers and residents over the weekend, Mustapha described Laluni as an important part of Guyana’s agricultural sector and said longstanding concerns over access to and allocation of land must be addressed.
Responding to residents’ concerns, the Minister cautioned that the Community Development Council (CDC) should not be distributing lands, if it is currently doing so, noting that land allocation must be handled by legally authorised agencies, primarily the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission (GLSC).
Given the number of land-related concerns raised, Mustapha committed to organising an outreach with the relevant authorities to examine residents’ applications and work towards resolving outstanding issues.
The Minister also directed the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) to assess drainage and irrigation needs in Laluni and First Creek. He said the Ministry would also work with farmers to improve access to quality planting materials and encouraged residents to identify two or three crops that could be produced on a larger scale and linked to reliable markets.
Mustapha further identified swine and honey production as areas with significant potential. He said training and beehives could be provided to support the expansion of honey production in the community.
With El Niño conditions creating additional challenges for farmers, Mustapha said the Ministry’s agencies have been instructed to work closely with producers to maintain agricultural output and support the continued development of the sector in Laluni and surrounding areas.
