Tensions flared in Agricola, East Bank Demerara on Monday morning, after a deadly shooting left one man dead and his brother in police custody for allegedly retaliating by firing shots at the suspected killer’s home.
The fatal incident occurred around 08:15 hrs on Titus Street, Agricola, where 28-year-old labourer Nicholas Narine, also known as ‘Biggs,’ was allegedly shot and killed by Rafael Bollers, a 27-year-old unemployed resident of Brutus Street, Agricola.
According to police, Narine was cleaning a drain east of Bollers' yard when the suspect—armed with a handgun—reportedly opened fire, discharging several rounds in his direction.
Narine collapsed at the scene and was rushed to the Diamond Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Investigators said he sustained three gunshot wounds: one to his abdomen, one to his back, and one to his right upper arm. A single 9mm spent shell was recovered at the scene.
Just minutes later, in what police suspect to be a retaliatory attack, Narine’s 22-year-old brother, Keon Narine, allegedly rode to Bollers' residence on a motorcycle and discharged several rounds at the house, before fleeing the scene.
Police subsequently arrested Keon Narine at his home on Ceaser Street, Agricola.
During a search of the premises, officers discovered an AR-15 rifle and a magazine containing five live 5.56 rounds of ammunition in the bedroom.
The suspect was arrested and taken to the Ruimveldt Police Station, where he reportedly admitted to firing at the house, claiming he acted out of anger over his brother’s killing.
He also told detectives the weapon belonged to his deceased brother.
Detectives processing the shooting scene at Brutus Street recovered 18 spent 5.56mm shells.
According to reports, this is not Keon Narine’s first run-in with the law. In January 2024, he was charged with possession of a firearm and ammunition without a licence, along with a separate charge of robbery under arms for allegedly stealing two gold chains valued at $300,000 during a gunpoint robbery in December 2023.
Meanwhile, police are actively searching for Rafael Bollers, who remains at large.
Investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
