Man given life sentences for double murder at Berbice hotel

On Thursday, two life sentences were handed down to a farmer who had entered a guilty plea to the 2019 killings of a Canadian hotelier and his watchman at Number 63 Village, Corentyne, Berbice.

This prisoner will not be given consideration for parole.

Alvin Druean, 49, of Number 65 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, also known as “Alvin Bhola” and “Blacka,” appeared before Justice Sandil Kissoon at the Berbice High Court earlier this month and entered guilty pleas to two murder indictments.

Dead: Vivekanand Narpatty.

He admitted that he killed 59-year-old Harry Prashad and 71-year-old Vivekanand Narpatty at the Sunsplash Hotel, Number 63 Village, between December 19 and December 27, 2019.

Dead: Harry Prashad

In his sentence statement, Judge Sandil Kissoon pointed out that Druean and other individuals had planned, thought through, and carried out the “cold, cruel, heartless, and sadistic murders” of these two pensioners.

According to the Judge, Druean told investigators that he was hired by Narpatty’s brother to kill him and that he was given $100,000 in advance with the remaining $900,000 to be paid later.

Justice Kissoon stated that the murderer was never given the balance.

Because of this, the Judge decided there was sufficient proof to extradite Narpatty’s brother to Guyana for him to face trial for the murders.

Druean in the end received life terms for both murder charges. The Judge also issued an order that precluded him from being granted parole.

Attorney-at-Law Surihya Sabsook represented Druean, and State Counsel Muntaz Ali presented the prosecution’s case.

A Corentyne man was also sentenced to four years in jail after entering a plea earlier in June.

The man was charged as a minor in 2020 with the deaths of the Canadian hotelier and his watchman.

According to reports, the men’s decomposing bodies were found in Narpatty’s hotel at Number 63 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, with some of their body parts hacked off.

The two men were reportedly found bound and gagged with injuries on their bodies in the dining area in the upper flat of the two-storey concrete building by Police ranks.

The entire building was ransacked.

The businessman’s body was found with two toes from his left foot severed and Prashad was found with both hands tied behind the back onto a post in the balcony and the left foot completely severed from the ankle, the Police had said in a statement.

Narpatty had migrated from Guyana to Canada but had visited home frequently.
