A man who is accused of setting a pensioner on fire following an altercation in the compound of the Huaxin Supermarket, was today charged with murder.

Twenty-two-year-old Marco Seudatt, of Fourth Street, Foulis, East Coast appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court.

He was not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that on  February 22, 2021, at Enmore, East Coast Demerara, he murdered 72-year-old Mathura Etwaru, a pensioner.

Magistrate Azore remanded Seudatt to prison and adjourned the case until May 18, 2021.

According to information, on the day in question, the accused and the pensioner had a misunderstanding and he lit some cardboard and threw Etwaru into the fire.

Last Monday, Etwaru was found lying on the northern side of the Supermarket with burn marks on the upper parts of his body. The matter was reported and police on viewing CCTV footage from the area saw Seudatt committed the act. He was later arrested and charged for the offence.
