Liverpool Farmer’s Home Destroyed By Fire Following Argument With Neighbour

A 60-year-old farmer from Liverpool Village, Corentyne, is left shattered and homeless after a horrific act of suspected arson reduced his lifelong home to ashes early Saturday morning—just hours after a bitter confrontation with his neighbour.

Gavin Cummings, who spent more than five decades building his life in the now-destroyed three-bedroom wooden home, described the incident as “heartbreaking” and “unbelievable.” The fire, which investigators suspect was deliberately set, tore through the property in the dead of night, leaving behind only charred remains and memories.

Cummings said his neighbour, with whom he had been feuding, had openly threatened to burn down his house just a day before the incident. The woman was found guilty in a related matter on Friday and was due to return to court for sentencing on Monday.

“The girl come over and light a fire and burn down the house,” Cummings recounted in tears. “She cuss and tell me she will burn down the old house I get there and how she will make me uncomfortable.”

The farmer said he had left home around 1:30 a.m. to sell produce at the Port Mourant Market. Barely an hour later, his phone rang—delivering the devastating news that his home was engulfed in flames. By the time he arrived, it was too late. Everything—his furniture, clothing, appliances, and keepsakes from a lifetime—had been destroyed.

“I lost everything… not even a bed or a plate left,” Cummings said quietly, surveying the ashes of what once was his home. He estimates his losses at over $15 million.

Cummings is now staying with a friend as he struggles to come to terms with the tragedy and figure out how to rebuild his life from nothing.
