Jury to Decide Fate of Man Accused of Killing Gambling Partner

July 30 2025
A 12-member jury has been empanelled to decide the fate of Alwyn Carter, who on Monday pleaded not guilty to a manslaughter charge in connection with the death of his gambling companion, Trevor Alfred.
Carter entered his plea before Justice Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the High Court in Demerara, denying responsibility for the April 5, 2021, killing.
The charge stems from a fatal altercation between the two men at Second Street, Grove, East Bank Demerara — the same location where the incident took place.
Alfred, 50, was a father of six and lived in the Grove Squatting Area, also on the East Bank.
The trial is now set to proceed, with the jury tasked with determining whether Carter bears criminal responsibility for Alfred’s death.
According to police, Alfred was fatally stabbed during a knife fight that erupted after a gambling dispute at a shop escalated into violence.
