Senior Magistrate Leron Daly on Monday morning granted a restraining order, compelling city businessman Devanand Singh to stay 1,000 feet away from his daughter who in an interview with the BIG Smith News Watch spoke of him brutally abusing her.

The restraining order has been made permanent and Devanand Singh was also ordered to give his daughter all her personal items.

Several videos have gone viral on social media depicting Devanand Singh, kicking and stomping his daughter. The businessman is being represented by attorney-at-law Bernard Da Silva.

He was instructed to make his next court appearance on May 6, 2022, for the continuation of the matters in which he was charged and pleaded not guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm on his daughter and threatening to shoot her.

He was granted $400,000 bail.

Recently, The BIG Smith News Watch, interviewed the daughter of the businessman who told her story in which she detailed a decade of abuse meted out to her by her father.

She also told how she planned her escape while her father was out of town. Soon after, the video of the brutal assault was uploaded to Facebook.

After the release of the video, the businessman went on social media and told viewers that the video recording that surfaced was “not what it seems”. But he did not deny that he was the man seen in the video stomping, kicking, cuffing, and slapping a woman in a Regent Street, Georgetown store he owns.

Meanwhile, the Guyana Police Force has commenced an investigation into the Kitty Police Station and its ranks over the handling of the assault matter when it was initially reported. The investigation is being conducted by the Police Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR).

“The OPR has launched an investigation to determine whether all the SOPs were followed by the investigating ranks from the Kitty Police Station,” a Police report said. It added, “The (OPR) is currently investigating the alleged unprofessional handling of a matter by ranks of the Kitty Police Station as it relates to a young woman who claims she was abused by her father for years.”

The statement from the Police Force pointed out that among the things being looked at will be the course of action the Police ranks took when the matter was first reported by the young woman.

The Police Force also announced that following the release of the video, ranks went to the businessman’s home where they seized his licensed 9mm pistol, a shotgun, as well as matching ammo. The items are lodged at the Kitty Police Station.
